Careers in Movement Disorders Medical Panel with HAPS

Our Careers in Movement Disorders Panel is an annual event in collaboration with the Houston Area Parkinson’s Society (HAPS). It is a virtual panel inviting neurologists and movement disorder experts from institutions in the Texas Medical Center and in Houston to speak about their careers. Topics covered include their journey to medicine and research, a typical day in their lives, and more. The panel is hosted on Zoom and typically happens in October of the fall semester.

Pancakes Around the World

Pancakes Around the World (PATW) is an annual event in which we invite the Rice community to come learn about Parkinson’s Disease and enjoy delicious pancakes from a wide range of cultures.

We partner with and have many cultural clubs serve breakfast items (i.e. pancakes) from different cultures, like mini bite sized crepes, scallion pancakes, samosas, haitian beignets, ube and pandan pancakes, salty tapioca with cheese, mini concha, mufleta, sambusas, dorayaki, korean traditional hotteok, walnut pancake, sesame pancake, niushe pancake, rice pancake, and lefse. This event is usually hosted at the end of the fall semester. Come out to learn more about Parkinson’s Disease while enjoying a diversity of pancakes from all around the world!

Spring Painting Event

Our Spring Painting Event invites individuals with Parkinson’s Disease and their families to come paint with Rice students at the Moody Center for the Arts’ Flex Space. Rice P4P partners with the Houston Area Parkinson’s Society to invite their community members (i.e. individuals with Parkinson’s and their families) to participate in an interactive painting activity with Rice student volunteers. In the past, we have partnered with Rice art clubs, who host a live painting tutorial during the event. This event is a lot of fun for our guests and students to get to paint and talk with each other. It is usually hosted in the early spring semester.

Parkinson’s Disease Conference

Our Spring Conference is an annual event inviting a variety of speakers including medical professionals, researchers, caregivers, and individuals living with Parkinson’s Disease. Every year the topic changes, and we have students come in person with virtual/in-person speakers. This event is usually hosted in early March of the spring semester.

Previous conference themes include “Bioengineering Tomorrow: Frontiers in Parkinson’s Research” and “Global Health and Parkinson’s Disease.”

P4P Breakfast Fundraiser

Every spring we have our annual Breakfast Fundraiser, in which we invite the Rice community to come enjoy pancakes and other breakfast foods in order to fundraise for and raise awareness for Parkinson’s Disease. We either host the event during brunch hours or at night (last year we had “Breakfast at Dark” — providing breakfast food at nighttime hours).

We also invite celebrity pancake flippers (aka Rice professors!) to come help serve pancakes and interact with Rice students. In addition, we raffle off gift cards and other items in order to fundraise, and we partner with Rice student music/dance groups and clubs to put on live performances during the event. This event is usually hosted at the end of the spring semester. Come out and eat some good food, watch live student performances, and win some fun prizes, all the while supporting Parkinson’s research. We can’t wait to see you there!
